The Last Week

I feel that being exposed to the 27 things has been a valuable experience for me. While it was often frustrating, probably because of my huge lack of knowledge about computers and all the terminology, I enjoyed the chance to become familiar with things I'd heard about but had no clue as to what they were. It has made me feel less out of touch, and hopefully that will allow me to better communicate with our patrons.

My two favorite discoveries were Library Thing with being able to catalog my own books as well as share with others and their favorites and ,of course, YouTube where I could, given time, spend endless hours viewing all the vidoes. I had no idea that a computer could be so entertaining! I think what surprised me the most is the endless amount of things available to us on the internet. Everything leads to something else.

My biggest frustration with 2.0 was the lack of time in which to do it. As an LA at a very busy library, there was very little time in which to work on it, and when I did I felt guilty because I was often leaving all the work to someone else. It sometimes created hard feelings. I think some of this could have been prevented by having fewer lessons or possibly have a separate set of lessons for the many of us with less computer experience.

I would like to see similar training opportunities in the future as new technologies emerge but, again, I would like to see them geared to the different levels of experience on the part of the participant.

Looking back at what I have learned overall, I would probably want to participate in the program again, but I must say there are many times earlier in the exercises that I never thought I would say that. However, my participation would be dependent on being sure we had adequate time without taking away from our regular duties, and having lessons geared to different levels of experience.

Week 11

YouTube has been a lot of fun for me. I can see where one could spend hours playing around with it. It would also be great for KCLS to use in giving patrons a tour of the various libraries as well as showing portions of programs featured at the library etc., etc.

Week #10

This has been one of the most interesting weeks for me. Google Docs seems like a great idea to me because it's accessable from any computer. In Google Labs, I found a number of services that were interesting. Among them, Google Video had a number of interesting and quirky clips and Googel Trip planner seemed like it would be an enormous help in getting around. Finally, from the Web 2.0 Award nominees, I chose Zvents which I found to be really helpful in locating some craft events that I hope to go to in the near future.

It's helpful to have websites organized in a particular spot for easier access.

#15 Learning About Wikis

I think wikis are a very useful and interesting way to disperse and share information. There are many ways libraries can make use of them as shown in this week's examples. Among the more obvious applications are sharing book reviews , listing programs and events and keeping patrons current about unexpected closures.

Library 2.0

While it's extremely useful and interesting, I just hope we're not getting too caught up on electronic information. It definitely has its place, but so does face to face (human) contact.

LibraryThing

I think this could be very useful as it will help me to keep track of my favorite books as well as allowing me to share them with others with similar interests or tastes.

Del.icio.us

This seems like an excellent way to easily find and keep track of websites that are of interest to me!

MySpace

I think MySpace will not be useful for me in particular, but I think it is good to be aware of it and it's importance to the teenage population. At least I do not feel totally ignorant about what it is.

Social Networking

I think it's a good idea for libraries to become involved in social networking sites. It's a way to connect especially with teens and let them know what the library can offer them.

What I Like About RSS

I like the idea of not having to visit a number of websites on a daily basis, but rather having all the information in one place. Also, not having all the adds pop up will make it so much nicer.

Flickr Color Pickr Flowers

I enjoyed looking through the Flickr Color Pickr mashup. It was especially entertaining when I selected flowers and saw all the many flowers in the various colors.

Spring is sprung

It has been such fun learning about Flickr and all the wonderful pictures one can find in it. I was delighted to find an especially beautiful picture of a daffodil which, of course, means spring is not far away!
